Frequently Asked Questions
Who can join Wall Street Community Garden?
We are a public space and any Vancouver resident can join.
Plots are allocated via our wait list, which is temporarily closed because we have too many applicants.
There are two membership restrictions:
1. Only one plot is allocated per household.
2. If you are already a member in another community garden, you are ineligible for membership in Wall Street Community Garden.
How do I get onto the wait list?
Vacant plots are allocated via our wait list. However, at this time the list is temporarily closed because we have too many applicants.
The list will re-open when current applicants have either been given plots or have voluntarily removed their names.
When the list re-opens, there will be an announcement on this website and you can apply via the email address that will be provided.
Do I have to pay to join Wall Street Community Garden?
Yes, members pay an annual fee of $35, due April 30 each season.
In special circumstances, alternate payment can be arranged by contacting the Treasurer or Membership Coordinator.
What are the responsibilities of garden members?
You are responsible each season for paying the $35 membership fee by April 30 and for turning the soil in your plot by May 1.
If you can’t work your plot, you may get help for one season. If you still can’t work your plot into the next season, your plot will be given to someone else, as per the Guidelines. In special circumstances, you can apply at a general or board meeting for an extension.
You are also expected to contribute a minimum of three hours labor per season. Contributory hours are earned by participating in work parties, leadership activities, attending meetings and weeding the pathways next to your plot, as per the Guidelines.
If I leave the garden, can I transfer my plot to someone else?
No, you may not transfer your plot to others.
Plots that become available when members leave are allocated first to existing members who wish to change plots and then to applicants on the wait list, as outlined in the Guidelines.
Can I visit the garden even if I'm not a member?
Yes, Wall Street Community Garden is a public space and we welcome visitors.
Please be aware that everyone on the garden site is expected to leash any pets and not use tobacco, cannabis, alcohol or other drugs.
Is garden produce available to anyone?
No, all plants grown in an individual plot, including flowers or vegetables, are for the personal use of the members working the plot.
Members pay for their materials and invest many hours in tending their plots. It is considered theft for another person to pick items from individual gardens without permission.
Plants grown in the community area, located just outside the main garden gate on Wall Street, are available to be harvested by non-members. The community area includes a large garden box and many smaller sack gardens, all of which are available as community food sources.
